If you are searching "check my BP claim status," here is the short answer: the big BP Deepwater Horizon class settlements stopped taking claims years ago, and the court says claims processing is finished. Nothing new is waiting to be filed. Here is what is still true in 2026, with the official sources.

|---|---|
| Medical Benefits proof of claim deadline | February 12, 2015 (passed) |

What the court says now
The case is MDL 2179 in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana. Its oil spill page says the deadline for both the Economic and Property Damages Settlement and the Medical Benefits Settlement has passed. In January 2021 the court ordered the Court Supervised Settlement Program to wind down, said there would be no further claims processing, and said issues about claims raised after that order would be considered time barred. Separate orders on August 5, 2021 covered closing the program and its trust.

The October 2026 news
On October 23, 2026, bp and the State of Louisiana announced that bp will pay Louisiana about $350 million at once instead of its remaining $373 million under the 2015 Economic Damages Settlement over seven years. That settlement is between bp and the government. It does not create a new claim for residents.
Watch out for "reopen your claim" offers
Big, famous cases attract people who charge fees to "recover" old money. A real settlement never charges you to file or to get paid. More in our guide to fake settlement texts and emails.

Frequently asked questions
Can I still file a BP oil spill claim in 2026?
No, not in the main settlements. The deadline for the Deepwater Horizon Economic and Property Damages Settlement was June 8, 2015, the Medical Benefits Settlement proof of claim deadline was February 12, 2015, and the Halliburton and Transocean punitive damages settlements closed to claims on December 15, 2016.
How do I check my BP claim status?
The court says claims processing in the Economic and Property Damages Settlement is complete, so there is no status left to check for new awards. For questions about an old economic claim, the court lists (866) 992-6174. For the Medical Benefits Settlement, it lists 1-877-545-5111.
Is BP still paying oil spill settlements?
Not to new individual claimants. In a January 22, 2021 order the court said the Court Supervised Settlement Program had issued more than $12 billion in awards on more than 178,000 claims and that claims processing was complete. BP still makes scheduled payments to the Gulf states under the separate 2015 government settlement.
What was the October 2026 BP and Louisiana deal?
On October 23, 2026, bp and the State of Louisiana announced that bp will replace its remaining scheduled payments to Louisiana under the 2015 Economic Damages Settlement with one early payment of about $350 million. That money goes to the state, not to individuals, so it does not reopen claims.
Someone says they can reopen my BP claim for a fee. Is that real?
Be very careful. The court has said that issues about claims raised after its 2021 wind-down order will be considered time barred. Do not pay anyone upfront, and check any offer against the court's oil spill page.
